Managing director of media buying agency OMD UK to replace Andy Barnes as head of �1bn-a-year sales business
Channel 4 has appointed Jonathan Allan, managing director of media buying agency OMD UK, to run its �1bn-a-year TV and online sales business.
Allan becomes only the third sales director in Channel 4's 29-year history and replaces Andy Barnes, who left in April after 20 years with the broadcaster.
He will lead a department of about 200 across agency sales, airtime management, sponsorship, ad-funded programming and product placement, future and digital media ad sales and strategic sales.
Allan is also to join the Channel 4 board and will report to David Abraham, the chief executive. His Channel 4 start date is yet to be confirmed.
He was one of six candidates shortlisted for the job, with other contenders understood to have included Channel 4 insiders Errol Baran and Mike Parker, UKTV's Julia Jordan and Omnicom's John Overend.
Allan joined OMD in 1995 as a graduate TV buyer and was promoted to TV director five years later. He became deputy managing director in 2005 and managing director two years later, aged 32.
"Jonathan has achieved an impressive amount in his career to date, and has considerable client-facing skills, as well as a track record in digital innovation. This is a crucial role at the heart of Channel 4's future strategy, and I am confident he will rise to the challenge," Abraham said.
Allan added: "I have worked with Channel 4 as both client and media partner for many years, so I am extremely excited to be given the opportunity to shape and direct the sales team to maximise its revenue potential."
